Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) must follow a low-protein diet to preserve kidney function and delay dialysis or transplantation. Dr. Schär developed Flavis, a range of protein-free products designed to support patients in their daily lives, with the goal of raising awareness within the medical-scientific community and giving patients a voice.
Managing CKD is not only a clinical issue, it’s also a social and emotional one. The challenge had three dimensions: creating a shared space for nephrologists, dietitians, and patients; shining a light on an often-overlooked need; and developing a communication strategy that was authentic, engaging, and spoke directly to those affected.
The first step was drafting a Consensus Paper, a scientific document co-created by experts and patient representatives to define shared clinical guidelines. Then came the documentary Travelling with Pino, developed in collaboration with the National Dialysis Patients Association. It gave voice to those living with the disease every day. Patients also took center stage in the ATL and BTL campaigns, in-store communications, and social media content, turning Flavis into a true point of reference for the CKD community.
This was more than just a campaign, it was a journey of awareness and empowerment for those living with CKD. The direct involvement of doctors and patients made Flavis not just a product, but a meaningful support initiative. A powerful example of scientific communication that informs, moves, and creates real value.
