Welcome

Dear Friends,

the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness-IAPB Italy has, since its foundation, focused its attention on the needs and requirements of people with visual impairment who, because of their reduced visual capacity, have lost their autonomy, and live in a situation of physical and, above all, psychological and social exclusion.

Visual impaired subjects are around 1.5 million in Italy: in order to give them helpful answers, we have tried to stimulate the field of low vision rehabilitation in our country, intended as multidisciplinary therapeutic field able to improve the lives of people with visual disabilities.

The Italian Law (284/97) stated a first distribution of visual rehabilitation services, but it was not followed by a homogeneous development on our national territory. We have therefore founded in Rome a National Centre of Services and Research for the Prevention of Blindness and Rehabilitation of Low Vision Patients in order to cover this gap, with the aim of increasing research into decreased vision and create a network among different local organizations.

Therefore we felt the need to organize the “International Symposium on Low Vision Rehabilitation and Visual Ability” to promote – among the most experienced national and international experts – the exchange of scientific information on different methods of visual rehabilitation, technological innovation, optical, electronic and informatics instruments and devices for low vision. A new important aspect is the relationship between the clinician and the rehabilitator according to current and future therapies available to treat macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and hereditary retinal degenerative diseases.

We are confident in the fact that the debate and information exchange will produce valid and significant scientific and socio-political results, encouraging further progress in all aspects of rehabilitation.

We are also confident – if we will focus our attention on the individual as a global entity, with his or her own specific characteristics, needs and motivations – in the fact that our Symposium could give people with vision impairment the answers they are waiting for.

We must therefore avoid the fragmentation of different highly specialized therapies, that may hinder rehabilitation and even worsen the general condition of the patients.

We rely on your scientific and human support, and we are looking forward to seeing all of you Congress participants here in Rome!
